Former Yemeni Minister of Fisheries Fahd Kafain announced today, Thursday, the arrival of a military delegation from the Arab coalition to the Socotra Archipelago amid Saudi efforts to address the situation in the archipelago currently controlled by the Southern Transitional Council. Kafain stated in a series of tweets on his Twitter account that "the spokesperson for the Arab coalition arrived in Socotra along with a military delegation to resolve the issues arising from the coup against state institutions."
Kafain, who is from Socotra, reported that there are messages from the Saudi side aimed at resolving the situation in the Socotra Archipelago following increased local demands for the Kingdom to fulfill its commitments regarding this matter. He indicated that "there is a mutual desire to expedite the return of the situation to normal in Socotra and to restore the state and local authority and activate state institutions, especially after the crisis there has escalated, leading to security, living, and service collapses in the archipelago."
Kafain added, "We await practical measures following consultations on the implementation mechanism for the urgent return of local authority to work and the activation of state institutions, which would ensure a halt to the decline of service and security conditions in Socotra." He continued, "Practical measures and implementation on the ground of what has been agreed upon in Riyadh regarding the return of the state, activating its institutions, and ending the coup and its repercussions in the Socotra Archipelago is the desired outcome of all attempts made in this regard, and there is no longer enough time for further delays at the expense of citizens' suffering."
The Southern Transitional Council seized control of the strategic Socotra Governorate in June 2020 following clashes with the internationally recognized government forces.
