The Japanese car company "Toyota" has surpassed its counterpart General Motors in the United States, marking the first time in 90 years that the Detroit-based automaker has not led annual car sales in the country. Toyota's sales exceeded 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. in 2021, while General Motors sold 2.218 million vehicles. General Motors' sales in America dropped 13% last year and 43% in the fourth quarter, while Toyota's sales increased by 10% for the year as a whole. In another context, General Motors' shares rose by more than 7% yesterday ahead of the launch of its first electric pickup truck, the Chevrolet Silverado, at the ongoing CES electronic show in Las Vegas. The vehicle is scheduled to hit the market early next year.
