Iran Announces Construction of New Nuclear Reactor in Isfahan

The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Islami, announced that the construction of a research nuclear reactor at the Isfahan nuclear facility will officially begin within weeks. He indicated that “Iran has planned to build research nuclear reactors to test fuel for other nuclear reactors.” During his inspection of the Isfahan nuclear facility, Islami pointed out that “Iran has laid out a new plan to produce 10,000 megawatts of nuclear electricity, and work is currently underway to select suitable locations for building nuclear facilities in the country, especially in the south.”

He also clarified that “the International Atomic Energy Agency is still present at Iran's nuclear facilities and is carrying out monitoring tasks within the safeguards system,” adding, “If someone claims until yesterday that they were unaware of the Iranian nuclear program, they are now informed about it in a documented, written, and official manner.”

Islami noted that “the nuclear fuel cycle is considered the most important part of the nuclear industry, and all this noise has been raised around enrichment so far, but the second phase now is the fuel cycle sector. We now have it in a research and semi-industrial capacity, but due to the enhancement of our engineering capabilities and our knowledge-based companies, we decided today to undertake this process industrially to produce nuclear reactor fuel, with part of it being produced at the Isfahan facility.”
