In France... A Presidential Candidate Aims to Ban the Name Muhammad

French writer and media personality Eric Zemmour, a potential candidate for the presidency of France, stated that he will prohibit Muslims in France from naming their children 'Muhammad' if he reaches the position of President. According to the French website "Télé 7 Jours," this came during an appearance on France 2, discussing his political ambitions and his readiness to officially announce his candidacy for the presidential elections scheduled for April 2022.

Zemmour, known for his hardline stance against Islam, mentioned that among the measures he would take if elected President of France would be to set rules for names given to Muslim children. He added: "We will ask Muslims to restrict their religion to belief and practice, not to apply their laws, which they generally do in all places where they represent the majority."

He also threatened to treat Muslims "as the French Revolution and Napoleon Bonaparte treated the Jews," stating: "I will reinstate the 1803 law (the civil code of the French Republic before its amendment), which prohibits any French person from naming his son Muhammad." In response to a question about closing mosques, he confirmed that he would not close mosques and would not prevent Muslims from attending them.
