Europe Prepares for Monkeypox Vaccine Purchase Operation

The European Commission announced that the European Union is preparing for collective procurement of vaccines and other treatments for monkeypox, confirming that details will be finalized in the "coming days." Stefan de Keersmaecker, spokesperson for the European Commission in the health sector, stated, according to "France Presse," that the European Health Emergency Response Authority "is working with member states and manufacturers to purchase vaccines and treatments for monkeypox." He added that "precise procedures will be defined with member states in the coming days." Spain has expressed its intention to acquire the antiviral vaccines "Imvanex" and "Tecovirimat" through a collective purchase process by the EU. "Imvanex," produced by Bavarian Nordic, is a third-generation vaccine (live non-replicating vaccine, meaning it does not replicate in the human body) that has been licensed for use in Europe since 2013 and is effective against smallpox in adults.
