A new study has shown that experiencing inflammation in middle age is primarily linked to future memory and concentration problems, with chronic inflammation—often lasting for months or even years—being the main cause of this issue.
It is important to note that symptoms of chronic inflammation include joint pain and stiffness, digestive issues, and fatigue. Dr. Keenan Walker, the lead author of the study, stated, "It is believed that many processes leading to the decline of thinking and memory skills begin in middle age, and this age may be the best time to respond and protect yourself from being involved in this cognitive decline. Our study's results indicate that chronic inflammation is the primary culprit behind this condition that needs to be addressed."
The study involved 12,336 participants followed for an average of 20 years, with blood tests conducted on all participants to look for signs of inflammation. The results showed that individuals with high levels of inflammation had poorer cognitive skills and memory.
Dr. Walker added, "Chronic inflammation is harsh on the body and can damage joints, internal organs, tissues, and cells. It can also lead to heart disease, stroke, and cancer." While other studies have looked at chronic inflammation and its effects on the brains of the elderly, this large study examined chronic inflammation starting in middle age and showed that it may contribute to cognitive decline in the decades preceding old age.
