U.S. President Joe Biden announced today, Thursday, the death of ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi following an American airstrike in Syria. A statement from the White House said: "Last night, under my supervision, U.S. military forces successfully conducted a counter-terrorism operation in northwest Syria to protect the American people and our allies and make the world a safer place." He added, "Thanks to the skill and courage of our armed forces, we were able to eliminate Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi - the leader of ISIS." He continued, "All Americans have returned safely from the operation. I will address the American people later today." In October 2019, ISIS announced through its affiliated agency "A'maq" the appointment of a "caliph" following the killing of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in an airstrike. "A'maq" stated at that time that ISIS "announces the appointment of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi as its caliph."
