The United Nations Secretariat warned this week in a message to the 193 member states of the organization about emails claiming to be sent by its Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to their representatives as part of a cyber attack, according to the "French Press Agency."
Referring to "a series of information security incidents," this message dated Tuesday, which was obtained by the Agence France-Presse on Thursday, noted that several diplomatic officials "received unsolicited messages claiming to be from the Secretary-General."
These emails inform recipients that Antonio Guterres is attempting to contact them via "his personal number."
This number is not linked to the United Nations, and the Secretariat clarified that it is not the sender of the messages, noting that "the Secretary-General's communication with member states follows an unspecified protocol."
It was pointed out that "the fraudulent messages were sent from American numbers and that U.S. authorities have been informed of these incidents that occurred this week."
