The young Tunisian, Aya Kazkaz, who represented her country in sailing at the Tokyo Olympics last summer, has tragically died at the age of 17 during a national team training accident, as announced by the International Olympic Committee on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday when the sailing boat she was on, with her twin sister and Olympic partner Sara, capsized due to strong winds, resulting in Aya drowning while her sister was rescued.
Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, expressed his shock at the news of Aya Kazkaz's death in a statement on the organization's website: "I am shocked by the news of the death of sailing champion Aya Kazkaz. She was an inspiring talent and a role model for her generation of athletes." He added, "Aya Kazkaz's participation in the Tokyo Olympics alongside her twin sister Sara will continue to inspire girls everywhere. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and the Olympic community in Tunisia."
The sisters participated in the women’s 49er FX sailing event at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing in 21st place.
