The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that the number of confirmed monkeypox cases worldwide has exceeded 3,000. He mentioned during the opening ceremony of the WHO emergency committee meeting on the monkeypox situation: "More than 6 weeks ago, WHO received notification of a cluster of 3 monkeypox cases in the UK with no travel outside its borders. Since then, we have received data on over 3,200 confirmed cases and one death from 48 countries." He added that in countries where monkeypox cases have been reported recently, the cases originally occurred among men who have had contacts with "gay men."
