Not Just Lack of Sleep... Causes of Tear Bag Swelling

The "Good Vision" Association stated that there are several causes for swelling of the tear bags, including lack of sleep, psychological stress, fluid retention, relaxation of the muscles and connective tissue around the eye, as well as genetic factors and aging.

The association explained that swelling of the tear bags can be tackled with some simple home remedies, such as placing cucumber slices or green or black tea bags on the swollen area.

Eye creams containing hyaluronic acid, collagen, or urea can also be used. If these measures do not succeed in alleviating the swelling, it is advisable to consult a doctor, as chronic swelling of the tear bags may indicate a serious disease, such as kidney or liver diseases or heart failure.

In addition to treating the underlying disease causing chronic swelling of the tear bags, chronic swelling can be resolved through surgery, for example, using laser treatment or eyelid lifting.
