After the Death of Two Individuals in a Tesla Accident: Was it in Autopilot Mode?

Following the death of two men in a Tesla vehicle crash, police believe no one was behind the wheel at the time of the incident. Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that the car was not operating in autopilot mode at the time of the accident, according to initial findings. Musk wrote on Twitter on Monday, in the company's first response to the accident that occurred in Texas on Saturday: "Data logs recovered so far indicate that the autopilot system was not engaged."

Police, after initial investigations, expressed they are "99.9% sure" that no one was driving, according to The Wall Street Journal. One of the men was found in the passenger seat next to the driver’s seat, and the other was in the back seat. The vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire after the accident.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board headed to the scene on Monday. The police acknowledged from the start that it was unclear whether the driving assistance system was engaged at the time of the accident.
