Bayern Munich suffered its first defeat of 2021 in the German Bundesliga at the hands of host team Borussia Monchengladbach, losing 3-2 at "Borussia Park" in the opening match of the fifteenth round of the Bundesliga.
The first half of the thrilling match ended in a 2-2 draw. Polish star Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring for Bayern Munich in the 23rd minute with a penalty, reaching his 20th goal of the season in the Bundesliga, becoming the first player to reach that number in the top five European leagues. Leon Goretzka added a second goal for the Bavarian team in the 26th minute, but Jonas Hofmann reduced the deficit for Borussia Monchengladbach with a goal in the 35th minute. Hofmann then equalized for the host team in the second minute of stoppage time in the first half.
In the second half, Florian Neuhaus scored the third goal for Monchengladbach in the 49th minute with a brilliant shot that went past Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. With this result, Bayern Munich remained at 33 points at the top of the Bundesliga standings, just two points ahead of second-placed Leipzig, who has 31 points and will host Borussia Dortmund tomorrow, Saturday. Meanwhile, Borussia Monchengladbach increased their tally to 24 points, placing them seventh.
