German Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, Robert Habeck, indicated that if there is a gas shortage, several industries in Germany will have to halt operations. In an interview with the German magazine "Der Spiegel," published today, the German minister stated, "If there isn’t enough gas, some industries that rely on gas will have to close. At that point, all market operations and economic activities will cease."
The German minister noted that a gas shortage would have catastrophic effects on various industries. According to him, "this means people will lose their jobs and regions may lose entire industrial complexes." Yesterday, the German minister announced that Germany is already facing a gas shortage due to reduced supplies from Russia, attributed to technical difficulties with the "Nord Stream" gas pipeline (a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea). He urged residents and businesses to reduce their gas consumption and, in light of this, announced the initiation of the second phase of the government’s emergency plan to address the energy crisis.
