Tehran announced it will pursue legal action against "those who ordered and executed" the assassination of former Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani, led by former U.S. President Donald Trump. In a statement published via Twitter, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that "the crime of assassinating martyr Soleimani was carried out under the direct orders of the then U.S. President Donald Trump, and Iran will legally pursue the commanders and perpetrators of this crime." The statement, issued just days before the second anniversary of the assassination, described the operation as "a clear example of systematic state terrorism." Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh announced last Monday that Tehran had initiated steps to pursue those involved in Soleimani's assassination from the very moment the crime occurred and added that it "will spare no effort in this regard until bringing these criminals to justice." Soleimani was killed alongside Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces official Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad Airport on January 3, 2020.
