Snap Inc. announced that it will launch new technologies and features to facilitate brands in creating augmented reality shopping experiences on its Snapchat application, in addition to a flying camera.
During its annual showcase of the latest technological advancements, the company, based in Santa Monica, California, introduced a pocket-sized camera called "Pixy," which can fly a few feet above its owner to capture photos and videos before landing in their palm.
The flying camera, which Snap indicated will cost $230, will be sold in the United States and France, marking a renewed effort to grow its hardware business.
The main theme of the Snap Partners Summit was "Return to Reality," reflecting the company's focus in recent years on augmented reality—a type of technology that enhances images, videos, or real-world experiences with computerized visuals.
Snap will begin offering a variety of free services to augmented reality developers, including data storage. Until now, image filtering and lens tools needed to be simple and compressed in file size for rapid uploading to the app.
The company will also introduce a new feature called "Dress Up" on Snapchat, which will allow users to virtually try on clothing and accessories.
Currently, Snapchat has over 600 million monthly users worldwide, up from 500 million last year.
