Sisi: It's Time to Raise the Price of Subsidized Bread

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stated on Tuesday that the time has come to raise the price of subsidized bread in order to provide the necessary funds for the school nutrition system, which amounts to 8 billion Egyptian pounds. In a speech during the opening of a food industrial city in Menoufia Governorate, north of Cairo, Sisi mentioned that the funds for the system would be provided by raising the price of bread and cutting part of the budgets of various ministries.

He commented, "It's time to raise the price of bread, which currently costs 5 piasters." He addressed the Egyptian people, asserting that they must contribute to bearing the financial burdens, not just the government regarding subsidized goods.

Sisi emphasized that it is unreasonable for the price of a single cigarette to equal the price of 20 loaves of bread, indicating that this situation must change. However, he assured that this does not mean significantly raising the bread price to the level of the government's incurred costs, which range between 60-70 piasters, explaining that proper organization is needed.
