COVID-19 deaths worldwide have exceeded five million as of Friday, with the Delta variant contributing to increased mortality, particularly among the unvaccinated. According to the “Our World in Data” publication, more than half of the global population has not yet received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. An analysis by Reuters indicates it took nearly a year for COVID-19 deaths to reach 2.5 million, while the subsequent 2.5 million deaths were recorded within just 236 days. More than half of all global deaths in the past week occurred in the United States, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, and India. Additionally, an average of 8,000 deaths per day was reported worldwide last week, which equates to five deaths every minute.
