The father of Egyptian national football player Mohamed Abdel-Moneim became a hero carried on shoulders in the streets of Sharqia, Cairo, during celebrations held by locals in his area in front of their home after Egypt's victory against Cameroon on Thursday, winning 3-1 in a penalty shootout (with a score of 0-0 in regular and extra time) in the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
A video circulated on social media and on the Egyptian site "Fi Al-Gool" shows Mohamed Abdel-Moneim's father surrounded by fans celebrating after the achievement that his son contributed to in the continental championship in Cameroon, bringing joy to Egyptians with important victories.
Mohamed Abdel-Moneim is relatively new to the Egyptian national team and was among the lesser-known players in Egyptian football until he was called up by Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to be a pillar of the national team. He managed to present himself strongly and make his mark on the field, even catching attention and winning the Best Player award in the match between Egypt and Cameroon at a time when the pitch was filled with stars from major European leagues, including Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool magician.
Sport analysts and critics describe Mohamed Abdel-Moneim as the "discovery of the tournament" and one of the best contributions Queiroz made to the Egyptian team alongside star Omar Kamel Abdel-Wahed.
It is worth noting that the Egyptian national team will play in the African Championship final against Senegal on Sunday at 23:00 UAE time.
