Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah acknowledged on Friday that the protracted negotiations with Liverpool regarding the renewal of his contract are a "sensitive" matter. The striker's contract with the club ends in the summer of 2023, and reports suggest that Salah is demanding a salary that would make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League.
Salah (29 years old) stated before the anticipated clash against Manchester City at the "Etihad" Stadium on Sunday, that it is a "sensitive issue for all parties involved," but he insisted that it "will not distract him from the goal of achieving a quadruple with Liverpool this season."
The team, managed by German coach Jürgen Klopp, is trailing Manchester City by one point with eight matches remaining in the season. Salah has scored only one goal in his last eight matches with the club, but he has a total of 28 goals across all competitions this season with Liverpool.
The Egyptian star told Sky Sports: "There are many things that people do not know. I cannot be selfish and talk about my situation because we are in the most important period ahead for the team." He continued, "I have said several times what I want, but I cannot go into detail about the contract now because it is a sensitive matter. I cannot go to the media and talk about the contract at this moment; I am just focusing on the team."
He added: "The most important thing for me is to stay focused on winning titles, and I am giving everything I have for the club," according to Agence France-Presse. Liverpool is aiming for a quadruple this season, having already won the League Cup and taken a step toward the semi-finals of the Champions League after winning 3-1 in the first leg of the quarter-finals against Benfica in Portugal on Tuesday. They are also set to face City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium next Saturday.
