The match was held at the "La Cartuja" stadium in Seville, and the regulation time ended in a 2-2 draw, prompting both teams to play two extra halves, in which the Basque team secured the victory.
The first half ended in a 1-1 draw, with Frenchman Antoine Griezmann initially putting Barcelona ahead in the 40th minute, before Oscar de Marcos quickly equalized for Athletic Bilbao in the 42nd minute. In the 77th minute, Antoine Griezmann scored Barcelona's second goal following a brilliant cross from Jordi Alba. In the dying moments of the match, substitute Asier Villalibre scored a dramatic equalizer for Athletic Bilbao.
During extra time, forward Iñaki Williams scored Athletic Bilbao's third goal in the 93rd minute with a spectacular shot from inside the penalty area that hit the left post and found the net. It is noteworthy that Athletic Bilbao eliminated Real Madrid from the tournament after defeating the defending champions 2-1 in a semifinal match held on Thursday at the "La Rosaleda" stadium. Meanwhile, Barcelona reached the final after eliminating Real Sociedad in the semifinals, winning 3-2 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation and extra time.
