"Sit Down and Be Quiet" and "Cockroaches"... Heated Debates Erupt Under the Parliament Dome

As expected, with the first moments of the legislative session in the House of Representatives, there was chaos and shouting on various issues. Deputy Halima Qaqour asked Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to speak during the voting, to which he responded to her objection by saying, "Sit down and be quiet." Qaqour retorted, "What is this patriarchal way?" This provoked the objection of Deputy Fares Khazen, who requested the deletion of the patriarchal phrase from the record, which was removed. Deputy Paula Yacoubian sarcastically responded to Khazen, saying: "Patriarchal doesn’t concern the patriarch; it means superior."

Shouting erupted again, this time between Deputy Cynthia Zarazir and Deputy Qablan Qablan, who described her as "cockroaches." Yacoubian said to Berri: "A deputy from your bloc describes a deputy as cockroaches." After the members of the Supreme Council for the Trial of Presidents and Ministers were elected by acclamation, the Head of the "Kataeb" party, Deputy Sami Gemayel, stated during the legislative session that not allowing deputies to access incoming papers is a violation of expressing opinions. He addressed Berri saying: "This council, the Supreme Council for the Trial of Presidents, is sterile and a graveyard for accountability, and there is no need for it," demanding that matters be referred to the ordinary judiciary. Berri responded, "You can change the constitution," to which Gemayel replied: "That is what we will do."

Gemayel announced the Kataeb's abstention from voting and participation, as did the opposition bloc and the Forces. Additionally, Deputy Ashraf Rifi directed his comments to Berri, saying: "My name was not listed for voting on item number 1, and I am abstaining. Are we deputies in the council or not?" Berri replied: "It is clear that there are those who do not want this session to be held."
