Plums are a highly beneficial and popular fruit, as they contain unique antioxidants along with soluble fibers. According to a new study published in the "Nutrition Journal," individuals who consume plums experience lower blood cholesterol levels and report feeling fuller than others, which prevents weight gain.
Researchers indicate that hunger levels decrease among those who eat plums, leading to a reduction in their overall food intake. The study conducted at the University of Liverpool found that regular consumption of plums can assist in appetite control while decreasing overall calorie intake.
The study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, researchers compared the levels of satiety, appetite, and calories consumed among participants who snacked on either plums, raisins, or gelatin-like candies, all of which were similar in calorie content. Researchers found that those who consumed plums had the lowest overall calorie intake in subsequent meals. Additionally, individuals who ate plums reported reduced hunger levels, improved feelings of fullness, and an increased ability to eat less in later meals.
In the second stage of the study, researchers focused specifically on weight loss. Participants were divided into two groups: those who followed a 12-week weight loss program with plums as a snack, and those who followed the same program but were only provided with guidelines for healthy snacking. Although there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding weight lost, the group that consumed plums averaged a greater weight loss compared to the group that received only healthy snacking guidelines. Furthermore, those who consumed plums reported higher levels of satiety and greater ease in following the weight loss program, according to the Times of India.
