An Australian girl has amassed over 130,000 followers on TikTok and started earning money from the platform after losing her job due to the COVID-19 crisis. Veronica B. (24 years old) rose to fame on the video-sharing app last year when she began filming short videos about the suburbs of Sydney, ranging from comedic takes on retail workers to types of Louis Vuitton fashion owners.
Veronica states that she was initially against TikTok, dismissing it as an app designed only for young children. A year ago, her job was suspended due to COVID-19, and feeling bored and lonely at home prompted her to look for a way to entertain herself while also making money.
Veronica's first video was a dismal failure, but then she presented a comedic sketch similar to what some men perform in Sydney's nightclubs, which went viral, prompting followers to request more of these clips. Thus, she created more comedic sketches based on stereotypes.
Her satirical videos cover a variety of topics, including mocking shop workers and the types of women who wear Louis Vuitton clothing, as well as discussing the culturally diverse suburbs of Western Sydney.
Veronica began collaborating with other content creators, and her follower count rapidly increased from 10,000 to 30,000, and when she reached 50,000 followers, she launched branded merchandise that sold out entirely.
She stated that TikTok has become her full-time job, and she is quickly approaching 150,000 followers, with many companies and businesses reaching out to her to create comedic videos. Veronica earns between $400 and $2,000 for each video. However, her success on TikTok is not without some criticism, and while it was difficult at first, Veronica learned to turn hate speech to her advantage, according to the Daily Mail.
