The World Intellectual Property Organization has issued a new patent for Facebook's first smartwatch, first spotted by LetsGoDigital. The patent reveals two designs for the smartwatch featuring detachable screens and three integrated cameras. The first design will have a square screen, while the second will feature a round screen. Both models are likely to include multiple lenses for the cameras, including macro, telephoto, and wide-angle lenses, with the addition of a zoom lens expected as well.
It has also been indicated that the Facebook smartwatch may come with a second display, which will have the same shape as the main screen. This second screen will also include several cameras with different lenses and can be swapped with the main camera.
Magnets will hold the screens of the Meta smartwatch models onto a casing connected to the user's wrist. The round model's screen can also be rotated, but it will not function like the rotating bezel of Samsung's smartwatch, where users can navigate menus by turning it. Instead, rotating the screen will allow the user to select the camera they wish to use. The desired camera must be set to the 12 o'clock position to enable it, rendering the other cameras unusable at that time.
There is a high likelihood that the upcoming Facebook smartwatch will also work with virtual reality and augmented reality systems. As hinted by Meta, the smartwatch may serve as an input device for VR headsets, and patent documents also mention the potential to connect the wearable device to VR headsets.
Facebook's first smartwatch will also function as a fitness device. It will be equipped with sensors for heart rate and body temperature, as well as infrared, motion, and activity sensors. Facebook plans to launch its first smartwatch this summer, which is likely to be made of stainless steel and may be available in black, white, and gold, according to PhoneArena.
