A British police officer has been officially dismissed for allegedly taking selfies at a crime scene and photographing individuals in distress during his duty hours. Merseyside Police described the actions of Officer Ryan Conley as "regrettable" after a special misconduct hearing found that he had stored racist images on his mobile phone between 2015 and 2018.
The Guardian reported that Conley took selfies while assigned to secure the crime scene where a teenager had been fatally stabbed in 2018. It was also alleged that Conley photographed victims of crimes and shared details about a woman who sought police assistance for domestic violence.
Merseyside Deputy Police Chief Ian Critchley confirmed Conley's official dismissal following a four-day hearing earlier this year. Typically, the outcomes of police misconduct hearings are published online; however, a spokesperson stated that the findings were available on the website for a limited time.
The spokesperson noted that Conley was convicted of three counts of possessing dangerous materials in November and is scheduled for sentencing on January 10.
