Ethiopian Ambassador to Egypt, Markus Tekele, revealed his country's intention to close its embassy in Cairo starting in October, citing economic conditions in Ethiopia. In statements to the BBC on Sunday, Tekele stated that the embassy's operations in Cairo will be suspended for financial and economic reasons, with the aim of reducing operational costs. He clarified that the closure is expected to last between three to six months.
Tekele emphasized that the closure of the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo is not related to the ongoing Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan. He noted that the embassy's affairs will be managed during the closure by the embassy's commissioner, who will take care of Ethiopian interests in Cairo.
The closure of Ethiopia's embassy in Cairo is part of a broader plan to shut down embassies in about 30 countries due to economic and financial challenges. This list includes countries like Algeria, Morocco, and Kuwait; however, Addis Ababa has not severed diplomatic relations with any of these nations.
