Warning of Global Famine

The news agency "Novosti" quoted Oleg Kubyakov, the director of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's office for relations with Russia, stating that the organization has warned of a global famine due to the Ukrainian crisis. He said, "If we look at hunger statistics and their developments, in 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were 690 million people suffering from hunger worldwide. In the following year (2020), this number rose to 811 million." He added, "This exceeded the red lines, from food security to the state of mass hunger. This year, according to our predictions, the situation in Ukraine will add 13-15 million people." Kubyakov pointed out that "the Ukrainian crisis was not the cause of hunger on this planet, and the statistics confirm this; however, the crisis has certainly exacerbated the situation."
