The German Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents stated that there are various reasons for nightmares in children.
They explained that simple causes include changing sleeping locations and the child's personality traits, as sensitive and introverted children are more prone to nightmares.
Additionally, the association mentioned that nightmares could be attributed to psychological reasons such as family issues, problems with peers at school, the burden placed on the child by parents, as well as organic causes like fever, conditions associated with fever, or undergoing surgery.
Simple measures can help address nightmares, such as ensuring that children engage in physical activities outdoors during the day and limiting media usage well before bedtime.
Rituals can also help mitigate nightmares, such as brushing teeth, wearing pajamas, or reading a book while lying in bed. It is also important for the bedroom to maintain a comfortable temperature, around 18 degrees Celsius.
If these measures are ineffective, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician to uncover any organic causes or to seek advice from a psychologist.
The association emphasized the importance of addressing this issue promptly, as it disturbs the child's sleep and deprives them of sufficient rest, negatively impacting their growth and leading to feelings of tiredness, fatigue, poor concentration, and daytime drowsiness, as well as affecting their academic performance.
