The British newspaper Express spoke with sleep expert Dr. Farina Sin to understand how you can enhance your sleeping patterns this year, and why it's important to do so.

#### Why is Getting a Good Night's Sleep Important?

Lack of sleep can be detrimental to your health, with various consequences such as irritability, decreased work performance, and the regular absence of sleep increasing your risk of serious medical conditions, including obesity, coronary heart disease, and diabetes, along with reducing life expectancy. Clearly, good sleep at night is essential for a long and healthy life.

#### What are the Best and Worst Sleeping Positions for the Body?

According to Dr. Sin, there are three main sleeping positions. One of these positions is great for proper nighttime rest and will leave you feeling refreshed in the morning. In contrast, the other two should be avoided if possible.

**Best Sleeping Position: Side Sleeping**

Dr. Sin stated, "With reduced back pain and the additional benefit of facilitating waste removal that accumulates throughout the day in the brain, side sleeping has been found to be particularly beneficial for the body. However, proper pillow selection is a must, as the wrong pillow can put pressure on the shoulder and neck area."

**Worst Sleeping Position: Stomach Sleeping**

Dr. Sin advises against stomach sleeping due to the strain and pressure it can place on the spine, leading to neck and back pain.

**Snore-Inducing Sleeping Position: Back Sleeping**

Dr. Sin said, "Many choose to sleep on their backs, with some thinking this position prevents wrinkles, though the evidence for this is somewhat weak. Additionally, since this position promotes the collapse of the upper airway, individuals who snore or suffer from sleep apnea should definitely avoid this position."
