Sleeping Position to Prevent Wrinkles

Getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night is beneficial for your health. However, sleeping in the wrong position or on an unsuitable pillowcase can actually make you look more tired. Fortunately, there are some tips to improve your chances of looking your best upon waking. Experts in medicine and beauty spoke to the American newspaper "Huffington Post" about three key elements: position, pillowcases, and methods to enhance your sleep in the best way possible to prevent wrinkles.

Dermatologist Michael Jacobs, Medical Technology Director at Cortina and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College, said, "Sleeping on your back is the best option when it comes to reducing wrinkles. When you sleep on your side, the skin folds and there is pressure on one side of your face, which can allow wrinkles to form. Sleeping on your back can help combat those unwanted lines." Dermatologist Courtney Rubin agreed that sleeping on your back is best for wrinkle prevention. She noted, "Favoring sleep on one side of your face or on your stomach can lead to pressure and shear forces on the skin, resulting in skin creasing. Spending long hours in a position that stretches and creases your skin can lead to wrinkles over time."

Dermatologist Arash Akhavan added, "Sleeping this way eliminates the possibility of pressing your face against a surface all night, as well as any potential irritation from the surface you sleep on."

Regarding the benefits of using the right type of pillowcase, Jacobs said, "Silk pillowcases are better for your skin. There is less friction between your skin and the pillow, reducing the negative impact that can occur on your skin." Jacobs also recommends sleep masks, stating, "Using a silk sleep mask can significantly reduce wrinkle formation by protecting the most sensitive area of your skin around your eyes."
