Vladimir Jabbarov, the first deputy chairman of the Federation Council's Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that the American attack on Syria is illegal, as it bombards the territory of a sovereign state.
He said, "This American bombing of Syria is illegal, because we are talking about bombarding the territory of a sovereign state." The Russian senator told the Sputnik news agency, "In this case, it is possible for Syria to appeal to the United Nations Security Council to request a discussion of the situation in an emergency meeting." Jabbarov added that what happened is extremely serious and could lead to the escalation of situations across the entire region. He also confirmed that such actions could lead to a "massive conflict," noting that "Syria possesses modern weapons, including S-300 systems, and the Americans must exercise extreme caution in such actions."
Jabbarov pointed out that the details of what happened are not yet clear, and thus only a preliminary analysis of the situation can be conducted at this time. However, everything so far appears extremely dangerous. The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) confirmed that the American military carried out strikes on facilities in eastern Syria used by Iranian-backed armed groups. The Pentagon stated that the attack was in response to recent missile attacks on American positions in Iraq. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said in a statement, "Under President Biden's direction, U.S. military forces conducted airstrikes earlier Thursday evening on infrastructure used by Iran-backed militia groups in eastern Syria."
