The microblogging platform "Twitter" announced the launch of a new direct messaging technology for "iPhone" users, described as "terrifying and amazing." Twitter indicated that its new direct messaging feature allows users to go straight to their inbox and allows any user to message you directly through your tweets. Many users have characterized this feature as "terrifying," as it opens the door to harassment, allowing anyone to send you a private message through your tweets, according to the tech website "The Verge."
Public defender of liberties, Eliza Orlins, stated that the introduction of such technology by "Twitter" makes users more vulnerable to harassment. Instead of having to open your profile to reach your inbox, users can share their thoughts through a private message without leaving the timeline.
No additional details have yet been announced about this feature, including who will be able to enjoy it, whether it can be customized to only allow close friends, or if it will be available to everyone. There is also uncertainty about whether there will be an option to disable it for safety and privacy reasons.
Charlotte Catania, a spokesperson for "Twitter," said, "This particular experience does not change the current direct messaging settings for anyone, and we are always exploring ways to make access to direct messages more valuable and appreciated by people on Twitter. Users will always have control: anyone has the ability to close their direct messages in their settings."
