Shamkhani to Kazemi: Expel the Kurdish Opposition from Iraq

The issue of the Kurdish opposition in Iraq continues to concern Iran. Iranian National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani expressed his country's fears on this matter during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Kazemi on Sunday. He called for the disarmament and immediate expulsion of the Iranian Kurdish opposition from the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Shamkhani also expressed concern over what he termed the "increasing activities of terrorist groups in the Kurdistan region," describing the presence of armed groups as a disruption to the security of both countries. Currently, several Iranian Kurdish opposition armed organizations are stationed in Iraqi Kurdistan, including the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (HDKA), the Democratic Party of Kurdistan (HDK), the Komala Organization of Iranian Kurdistan, and the Free Life Party of Kurdistan (PJAK). Iran accuses these entities of seeking secession and engaging in "terrorism" and "colluding with foreigners."

In contrast, these groups accuse the Iranian regime of violating the national rights of Kurds in Iran, asserting their goal is to achieve Kurdish rights through the establishment of a federal system.

It is noteworthy that in the days leading up to Kazemi's visit to Tehran, specifically since last Thursday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard conducted intense bombing of the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan and the Democratic Party of Kurdistan along the border region between the two countries, with the bombardment lasting three days.

A Kurdish source close to the two parties stated to "Al Arabiya" that the heavy shelling on the border areas resulted in significant material losses; however, none of the Peshmerga forces were harmed. The source added that the bombardment was executed using artillery from the Revolutionary Guard, preceded by reconnaissance flights using drones, targeting the parties' headquarters in the Alaneh, Barbazin, and Halgoor heights. Iranian drones were also observed flying over Choman, Sidkan, and Bradost.

On the sixth of this month, the commander of the ground forces of the Revolutionary Guard, Mohammad Khakpour, threatened the possibility of military strikes against the Iranian opposition present in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

In parallel, the "Mashriq News" website, which regularly reports on the military activities of the Revolutionary Guard, mentioned that the purpose of the attacks was to target the headquarters of the Kurdish parties in three areas: "Sidkan, Choman, and Hajji Imran" in Iraq. It is worth mentioning that Shamkhani had previously told the Iraqi Foreign Minister in August that the Iraqi government must take "more serious measures" so that Iran does not have to take "preventive measures" against these groups.
