Pashinyan: Accuses Army of Attempting a Coup... Moscow Calls for Calm

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan described the statement from the General Staff, which calls for the resignation of the Prime Minister and his government, as an attempt at a military coup.

In a post on his official Facebook account today, Thursday, Pashinyan stated: "I consider the statement from the General Staff to be an attempt at a military coup, and I call on all our supporters to come to Republic Square now. I will address the public soon on air." The Armenian armed forces' General Staff demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in a statement, expressing strong protest against the dismissal of the First Deputy Chief of the General Staff and warning Pashinyan against using force against the people, saying: "The General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces expresses its strong protest against the dismissal of the First Deputy Chief of the General Staff for short-sighted and unreasonable reasons, which was carried out without regard for Armenian national interests and based on personal feelings. Under these difficult circumstances facing the country, such a decision is considered an anti-state and irresponsible step."

The statement added: "Based on the current situation, the Armenian Armed Forces demand the resignation of the Prime Minister and the government, while also warning against the use of force against the people whose sons died defending their homeland and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)." Earlier, hundreds of people gathered in the center of the Armenian capital, Yerevan, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. One of the organizers of the demonstration, Arshak Zakaryan, stated that a great betrayal occurred in Karabakh, and the perpetrator must be punished. In a related context, the Kremlin announced that Moscow is closely monitoring the developments in Armenia and what is happening there is an internal matter, calling on all parties in the Armenian crisis to remain calm and keep the situation within constitutional boundaries.
