EU Election Observation Mission Chief: We Noticed Violations of the Election Silence

The head of the European Union election observation mission in Lebanon, George Holveiny, visited the Prince Shakib Arslan Intermediate Mixed School in Verdun, inspecting the voting process.

Following the visit, Holveiny stated: "The EU election observation mission wishes to inform that it has deployed around 170 observers throughout the country today. Since early morning, our teams have been in the field, sending reports on the election process from 26 small districts and 15 major districts in Lebanon. Our field team noted that most polling stations opened on time, with some opening slightly late."

He continued: "Overall, we observed a calm atmosphere inside and outside the polling stations, with some minor issues. Our observers recorded an increasing turnout at the polling stations by voters. We also noted the inaccessibility for voters with disabilities in two-thirds of the polling stations we are monitoring."

He added: "Our media monitoring team noticed several violations of the election silence on major television channels, including the appearance of political content by candidates."

He emphasized that our team will remain present in all regions throughout the day to monitor the remainder of the election process, including vote counting and the compilation of the overall results.

He continued: "As the election process is ongoing and we do not intervene, the mission will provide an assessment of what it has observed during the election campaigns and on election day in a press conference to be held next Tuesday, May 17, at 11 AM."
