An American defense official confirmed on Saturday that U.S. forces in eastern Syria were subjected to an "indirect gunfire attack." The official told Reuters that indirect fire targeted U.S. forces in eastern Syria, but initial reports did not indicate any injuries or damages. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, specified that the attack occurred in Konoko, Syria.
Earlier on Saturday, a Sputnik correspondent in Deir ez-Zor reported that the Conoco gas field base, which the U.S. military occupies without legal basis in eastern Syria, was attacked on Saturday evening by unknown sources using mortar shells. It was noted that at least one mortar attack was carried out by unidentified individuals on the illegal U.S. base in "Conoco," which is the largest natural gas processing facility in Syria, confirming that there were no reports of human injuries.
Local sources informed Sputnik that a loud explosion was heard at the Conoco oil field, which triggered alarm sirens at the U.S. base dominating the area, mentioning that there were no signs of injuries among U.S. forces and other allied forces within the so-called "international coalition."
In recent weeks, the military bases of U.S. occupation forces in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor have faced successive attacks that led to the explosion of ammunition depots and injuries to some stationed there. This new incident marks the fourth time that U.S. positions in the Syrian oil and gas fields of Al-Omar and Conoco have been attacked. Despite stringent measures taken by the U.S. military in the vicinity of the fields and neighboring villages and towns, including regular patrols, they continue to struggle with security control over this oil-rich area, which they seized in late 2017.
