George Khabbaz: If I Had a Daughter, I Would Treat Her Like in 'Aṣḥāb Wa Lā Aʿz'

Lebanese actor and playwright George Khabbaz, star of the film "Aṣḥāb Wa Lā Aʿz," expressed his pride in participating in this work, revealing he is ready to play the same game, “because I’m not married.” The film, released on Netflix earlier this year, stirred significant controversy and criticism aimed at its actors, including Khabbaz, who portrayed a plastic surgeon named "Walid."

In an interview with Al Arabiya.net, Khabbaz mentioned he anticipated the success of "Aṣḥāb Wa Lā Aʿz" as it addresses taboos and issues present in our societies that are often avoided or not openly discussed. He added that he expected the film to create "this debate," noting it is "natural for there to be supportive and opposing opinions."

Khabbaz believed that some criticisms were exaggerated, stating they were presented in a superficial manner and touched on personal aspects of some actors. However, he acknowledged that some criticism was positive, expressing he is "very proud and not regretting at all" his involvement in the film.

He affirmed that if he were ever asked in ordinary life, while with friends, to place his cellphone on the table to expose his calls and messages, he would agree without hesitation because he is "not married." He added, "Perhaps if I were in a romantic relationship or married, I would have refused."

Khabbaz also commented that if he were married and had a young daughter like in the film, he would handle her the same way "Walid" treated his daughter in the film, telling her directly: "I raised you on principles and values, and so did your mother. I tell you: don't go out, because you might make mistakes and carry that mistake your whole life. But now that you are 18, you are the mistress of your decision."

When it was pointed out that some may consider his way of treating his daughter, like in the film, brave and a break from Eastern customs and traditions, he replied, "Unfortunately, our society does not progress or develop because of one of these reasons."

On another note, Khabbaz is preparing for a drama titled "Searching for the Brando of the East," in which he will be joined by Syrian actress Amal Arafa. Filming is set to begin in a week, and the work will soon be available on the Shahid platform. He also confirmed that his theater will soon resume operations, as he feels he "breathes theater." Currently, he is working on a play that "addresses our humanity, our faith in God, our roots, and our conscience."
