High-Ranking Iranian Official: The U.S. Cannot Be Considered Part of the 5+1 Group and Sanctions Must Be Lifted First

A high-ranking Iranian official has rejected the notion of considering the United States as part of the 5+1 group, asserting that there will be no negotiations before Washington returns to the nuclear agreement.

The Al Jazeera channel reported moments ago that the Iranian official reiterated Iran's refusal to view the U.S. as part of the 5+1, emphasizing that there will be no negotiations until Washington returns to the nuclear deal. The official indicated that the U.S. must lift sanctions before discussing negotiation proposals regarding the nuclear agreement.

He confirmed that Washington cannot return to the nuclear agreement table before compensating for the losses from the previous phase. The Iranian official noted that the Biden administration knows what needs to be done if it wants to return to the nuclear agreement, and this does not require negotiations, demanding Washington to commit to its obligations under the nuclear agreement without proposals and mediations.

The Iranian high-ranking official pointed out in an interview with Al Jazeera that Trump imposed sanctions on 800 Iranian entities and individuals, and the Biden administration must lift these before any steps can be taken.

The Wall Street Journal announced this evening that Iran has rejected a European offer for talks regarding the nuclear agreement with Washington. The newspaper reported that Western diplomats stated that Iran is refusing a European offer for discussions about the nuclear agreement with the U.S. It clarified that Tehran seeks a guarantee that Washington will lift some sanctions after the nuclear agreement talks.

The newspaper confirmed that Iran's rejection has not extinguished hopes for direct negotiations in the upcoming months. Earlier, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that Iran is considering a proposal from the European Union to hold an informal meeting among the current members of the 2015 Tehran nuclear agreement and the United States, but it has not responded yet.

There is a dispute between Iran and the United States regarding who should take the first step to revive the 2015 agreement. Iran insists that the U.S. must first lift the sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump, while Washington argues that Tehran must first return to full compliance with the agreement.
