More than 22 years ago, Fadi Al-Khatib, the star of Lebanese basketball, visited Dubai for the first time, continuing to frequently travel to "The Jewel of the Gulf," making Dubai his first and permanent destination after his home country, Lebanon. Al-Khatib, who is considered one of the most famous basketball players not only in the Arab world but also in Asia, chose Dubai to launch his promising sports project: the "Champs Academy." Through this academy, he aims to hone talents and encourage youth to invest their free time in ways that enhance their energies and skills in basketball, football, martial arts, and other sports included under the academy's umbrella in the Al Quoz area of Dubai.
Al-Khatib confirmed that the choice of Dubai to launch his sports project was the result of several factors, the most notable being that Dubai feels like his second home, as he has been visiting "The Jewel of the Gulf" since 1998. He stated that the UAE is the only country where he feels he can adapt, as well as the high level of security and safety in the country, and the opportunities for developing ideas and projects. One of his main goals is to provide the necessary addition to sports, preparing a promising generation in basketball and other games while filling their free time with sports and health culture.
He added that his next step involves expanding throughout the country to present a true image of the importance of sports and its impact, especially on youth and motivating talents. He aims to expand on an Arab level in the near future, expressing his deep gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, for providing opportunities for every ambitious individual who can contribute to serving the community. He also thanked all authorities and officials, especially the Dubai Sports Council and the UAE Basketball Federation, for their hospitality and cooperation.
He elaborated that the UAE, particularly Dubai, is known for its constant welcome to anything that adds to the community. The launch process of the project went smoothly, especially since the responsible authorities were always keen on guiding and advising regarding procedures and requirements. "The Jewel of the Gulf" is witnessing a qualitative leap in sports, and we seek to be partners in promoting the concept of sports as a lifestyle through the "Champs Academy."
The Lebanese basketball star revealed that the academy comprises over 400 students divided between basketball and football, with an area of 73,000 square meters capable of accommodating 1,000 individuals for sports activities. Currently, the academy receives between 2,000 and 2,500 people weekly, including academics, parents, and basketball and football players.
He highlighted that "Champs Academy" was established in 2019 and has organized several sports programs in cooperation with multiple schools. The project came to light, particularly after collaborating with entities such as the UAE Basketball Federation and the Dubai Sports Council. The sports facility includes a fitness center and a martial arts studio that offers five disciplines: karate, boxing, kickboxing, kung fu, and jiu-jitsu, in addition to basketball and football, along with various sports activities and events.
Al-Khatib mentioned that the academy features over 12 coaches, including foreign trainers, although the majority are from Lebanon, and they are qualified, having undergone training and education programs at the international level of basketball, especially since he is a member of the International Basketball Federation for developing youth skills.
