Members of the European Parliament on Thursday called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to conduct an independent investigation into a wave of poisoning incidents affecting schoolgirls in Iran. Iranian media and officials have reported that 13,000 school students, mostly girls, have fallen ill after what is believed to be poisoning incidents. Some politicians have accused religious groups opposed to girls' education. The European Parliament condemned this "heinous attempt to silence women and girls in Iran" in the strongest terms. It also urged EU member states to facilitate the issuance of visas and grant asylum and emergency aid to those needing to leave Iran, "especially women and girls."
