Popular Anger Amid Continuing Strikes in France

Strikes at refineries in France continued today, Saturday, with more protests erupting across the country in response to the government's push to raise the retirement age without parliamentary voting. A spokesperson for TotalEnergies revealed that about 37 percent of operational employees at the company's refineries and depots in France participated in the strike today.

Simultaneously, rolling strikes continued in the railway sector. French riot police clashed with protesters last night, Friday, in Paris, where a demonstration took place at Place de la Concorde near the parliament building, resulting in the arrest of 61 people.

As unrest grows alongside increasing piles of garbage on the streets of Paris, following the participation of sanitation workers in the strikes, President Emmanuel Macron is facing the most serious challenge to his authority since the so-called "Yellow Vests" protests in December 2018.
