The English Football League announced today, Friday, that it has "agreed to a record broadcasting deal with Sky Sports worth £935 million ($1.18 billion) over five years, an increase of 50 percent over the value of the current broadcasting rights agreement." The league, which organizes competitions below the Premier League, stated that "the agreement will include guaranteed payments of £895 million along with £40 million in the form of marketing benefits." Sky Sports CEO Jonathan Licht confirmed in a statement that "this is the largest deal in football in terms of the number of matches broadcast," adding that they "look forward to working with the English Football League and its 72 member clubs to provide fans with a more enjoyable viewing experience." However, the deal only represents a small fraction of the value of the Premier League's deal. The league renewed its agreements with Sky, BT, and Amazon for around £5 billion for three seasons until 2024-2025.
