Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina accused her Belarusian rival Aryna Sabalenka of "igniting the fire" after she stood by the net waiting for a handshake that she knew would never happen following their quarterfinal match at the French Open. In a press conference, Svitolina stated, "I don't know, to be fair, what she was waiting for because my statements have been clear enough regarding the handshake." Svitolina warned that she would not shake hands with any player from Russia or Belarus after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine last year.
