The Russian Federal Security Service stated that they detained Gerchkovich in the city of Yekaterinburg and opened a spying case against him for allegedly collecting what they called secrets about the military-industrial complex. TASS news agency quoted a source claiming that Gerchkovich "strongly denied all accusations and stated that he is engaged in journalistic activities in Russia." Meanwhile, the "Wall Street Journal" denied the espionage allegations against Gerchkovich and called for his immediate release.
