The Vatican announced in a statement today, Wednesday, that Pope Francis is suffering from a respiratory infection and needs to spend "a few days" in the hospital for treatment. The Vatican added that the 86-year-old pope complained of breathing difficulties in recent days, noting that tests showed he is not infected with COVID-19. Spokesperson Matteo Bruni explained that the pope went to Gemelli Hospital in Rome for a previously scheduled checkup. Earlier today, the 86-year-old pope participated in a public event and appeared to be in good health. Pope Francis has a health issue related to his colon, having undergone surgery in 2021 to remove part of it, and earlier this year, he indicated that this condition had returned and caused him to gain weight.
