The Suez Canal Authority announced on Sunday that a container ship had run aground in the Egyptian canal, without affecting the flow of traffic in the waterway. According to Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, the head of the Suez Canal Authority, ongoing marine rescue operations are underway to deal with the grounding of the container ship MSC ISTANBUL, which was transiting the canal as part of the south convoy on its journey from Malaysia to Portugal.
Lieutenant General Osama Rabie stated: "The authority deployed four tugs to assist with the grounding of the container ship during its passage through the canal."
Upon receiving notification from the main navigation control center regarding the grounding of the ship at kilometer 78 of the canal, four tugs were immediately dispatched to refloat the ship, including the Port Said tug with a pulling capacity of 95 tons, as well as the tugs Assist 1, Assist 2, and Assist 5. The tug Baraka 1 is expected to join the efforts for refloating as well.
