The United Nations-mandated fact-finding mission urged Iranian authorities on Wednesday to stop executing individuals who have been sentenced to death for participating in anti-government protests that shook the country last year. The head of the fact-finding mission, Sara Hussein, stated: "We call on Iranian authorities to halt the execution of those convicted and sentenced to death in connection with the protests, and we reiterate our requests to be informed about the judicial files, evidence, and rulings pertaining to each of these individuals." She demanded the "release of all those who have been detained for exercising their legitimate right to peaceful assembly and expressing themselves about the protests."
The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September 2022 while in the custody of the morality police sparked a wave of protests across Iran, representing the largest challenge to the country's religious leaders in decades. Since then, several people have been executed for their involvement in the disturbances, which Iranian leaders have accused foreign adversaries of inciting.
