A statement from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Minister Qin Gang told his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki during a meeting in Beijing on Tuesday that China places great importance on the Palestinian issue and will continue to support peace talks, offering to contribute "Chinese wisdom."
Palestinian media outlets have mentioned that President Mahmoud Abbas will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his fifth visit to China to discuss the Palestinian issue and exchange views on regional and international matters of mutual interest.
China has historically maintained a good relationship with the Palestinians and has frequently spoken about its mediation capabilities since Abbas's visit to Beijing in 2017. However, it has done little in this regard until it mediated a surprising agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to restore diplomatic relations in March.
China occasionally sends envoys to Israel and the Palestinian territories but has not played a major role in Middle Eastern conflicts or related diplomacy, despite its reliance on the region for oil.
