Ukrainian Shelters Unfit for Use... Zelensky Promises Improvements

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his dissatisfaction on Monday regarding the inspection results of all Ukrainian shelters, which he had ordered following the deaths of three people who could not access a shelter during a Russian airstrike on Kyiv. In a nighttime address, Zelensky stated that he received brief reports about the "preparedness and shortcomings" of the shelters from Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin, and Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov. He noted that "the results are, to say the least, unsatisfactory. Draft decisions regarding this matter will be prepared by Friday, concerning the responsible parties and ensuring an appropriate level of protection for our people in all Ukrainian cities." Kamyshin mentioned on June 4 that nearly half of the shelters in Kyiv that were inspected during the initial audit were closed or unfit for use.
